PhD Biotechnology is offered at the department of Biotechnology, University of Mumbai. The department also conducts summer / short term training programs for postgraduate students in biological sciences.

Name of PhD guide - Dr Mrs Varsha Kelkar-Mane (Assistant Professor and I/c Head)

Introduction: Dr Varsha Kelkar-Mane is a doctorate in Applied Biology from Shri C.B. Patel Research Centre, University of Mumbai. She was associated with the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute for 2 years before joining the University dept of Biotechnology, University of Mumbai as a full fledged faculty. She has been heading the department of Biotechnology since 2007 and has initiated research activities and multiple research collaborations in the department. Her area of specialization is Microbiology and Bio-Nanotechnology and she has been handling the following projects in the field.
1. Study of the PCR enhancing efficiency of Transition metals – DST Purse project
2. Preservation of archival documents and microbial biodeteriogens database preparation for archival documents – in association with the Directorate of Archives, Govt of Maharashtra.; year of commencement –submitted to DBT, Govt of India.
3. Green cosmetics – under the University with Potential for Excellence scheme, University of Mumbai.
4. Microbial degradation studies of plasma treated and untreated Poly (ε-caprolactone).

Short term / summer training in Biotechnology

The department receives a number of applications for the purpose of summer training or short term training to Post graduate students in biological sciences from various colleges / Universities across the country. A number of student’s have competed 2 weeks six months training program in the various research areas related to Biotechnology. The fees for the purpose of summer training is Rs 2000/-. Fees are to be paid at Allahabad bank, Kalina branch after collecting the challan from the department office.
