VISION
To transform the teachers into
inspirational role models for the young and impressionable
students, who in turn will create a just and equitable society
that will be progressive and secular.
MISSION
Our UGC Human Resource Development Centre
will be an institute that will strive continuously to achieve
academic excellence through its programmes - an institution
committed to preserving and enhancing the core values of the
teaching profession. Through our programs, we will equip the
teachers with necessary skills to meet the ever mounting
challenges of higher education and inculcate in them the pride
of belonging to this noble profession and become role models for
generations to come.
OBJECTIVES
The main
objectives of our HRDC are to enable the teachers:
-
To
understand the significance of education in general and
higher education in particular in Indian and global
contexts.
-
To
acquire and improve basic skills of teaching and also the
use of ICT in teaching learning process.
-
To be
aware of the latest developments in their specific subject.
-
To
understand the link between education and economic, social
and cultural development of the country.
-
To
develop one's personality and creativity and become
inspirational role models for the students.
PHILOSOPHY
The main
philosophy of UGC for Human Resource Development Centre is to
keep in mind that the teacher is central to the system. While it
is universally accepted that the teacher is the pivot of the
educational system, our system does not provide adequate
opportunities for their professional development. It is,
therefore necessary to develop inbuilt mechanisms to provide
opportunities for teachers within the framework of knowledge
society. It is also accepted that a teacher must not be confined
only to transmitting information; she/he must also orient
students to meet the challenges of life, to not merely become a
trained professional, but also a better citizen.
BACKGROUND OF UGC HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT CENTRE
In pursuance of the National Policy of
Education 1986 and its Programme of Action, the University
Grants Commission had identified 48 Universities for setting up
Academic Staff colleges (presently known as HRDC) in the country
in the year 1986 - 87 to cater to the training needs of teachers
in the higher educational system. University of Mumbai was one
of these Universities identified for setting up of University
Grants Commission's Academic Staff college and it was
established in the year 1987. The UGC Academic Staff colleges
are distinct entities in faculty development in tertiary
education conducting specially designed Orientation Programmes
and subject based Refresher Courses for College and University
teachers.
PROFILE / Novel features
of UGC Human Resource Development Centre, University of Mumbai
Our UGC Human Resource Development Centre (UGC
HRDC), University of Mumbai is located in the heart of Mumbai -
the commercial capital of our country. Mumbai, by virtue of its
position, is the most cosmopolitan of our cities and we can say
that Mumbai is the very microcosm of our country. Thus, we are
uniquely placed in the composition of our teacher participants
and in the availability of resource persons. Hence, we get
participants with widely varying backgrounds, and their coming
together in our programmes provides a unique opportunity for the
exchange of ideas which, in turn, results in all-round
development of the teachers. We are also able to draw our
resource persons from renowned institutions like TIFR, TISS,
BARC, BSE, IIT, ICT and from other industries, government
bodies, cultural centres, in addition to faculty from the
University Departments. These unique features make our
programmes attractive and widely appreciated by our teacher
participants.
Since its inception, UGC HRDC, University
of Mumbai has so far offered 113 Orientation Programmes, 266
Refresher Courses and other Short Term Programmes benefitting
more than 15,000 teachers. Our HRDC attracts participants from
all over the country as we have been able to impart quality
training through our
Orientation Programmes, Refresher Courses
and Short Term Courses and now it has blossomed into a centre
of excellence.
This was also acknowledged in the recent
NAAC review wherein we have been ranked 7th amongst
66 Human Resource Development Centres in the country and rated
