Introduction

The Department of Civics and Politics was established in 1948 with the help of two Endowments.  The Mayor’s Sir Pherozeshah Mehta Centenary Commemoration Fund and the Montague Memorial Fund together with a donation from the Bombay Municipal Corporation’s Municipal Fund and a substantial recurring grant from the then Government of Bombay.

The Department conducts two-year post-graduate course in Politics with various sub-groups leading to the award of M.A. (By Papers) degree of the University of Mumbai.  In addition it also conducts M.Phil., Ph.D. and Post Graduate Diploma Course in Human Rights courses.  Since inception of the Department, over 1000 students have taken their Master’s degree by papers, 10 students have taken their M.A. degree by research, 29 students have received their M.Phil. degree and 90 students have been awarded doctorate degree.  Under the Post Graduate Diploma Course in Human Rights above 300 students have received their degrees.  It is indeed a pleasure to report that alumni of the Department are holding key position in various institutions in India and abroad.

It is worth noting that the The Department’s contribution to the subject was recognised by the University Grants Commission when it was awarded the University Leadership Programme for three years in 1988 and the Ford Foundation Programme in 1988.  Further the University Grants Commission also granted the status of Department Special Assistance in May 1992 and we are proud to receive this status in three phases till 31st March, 2007.  The University Grants Commission, New Delhi has also selected and recommended the Department for induction and support under UGC Assistance for Strengthening  of the Infrastructure of the Humanities and Social Science (ASIHSS) programme for a period of five years from 1st April, 2005 – 31st March, 2010.  Under these scheme the Department received a grant of Rs. 31.00 lakhs.
