Introduction:

The University of Mumbai is the oldest centre for German Studies in India. The Department of German offers full-fledged academic & research programmes. It conducts full time programmes in German studies (B.A, M.A., M.A. (Hons.), M.Phil., Ph.D.) as well as part time programmes in German & Japanese (Certificate, Diploma, Advanced Diploma), Diploma in Translation & Tourism and Communicative Marathi Level 1.

Our aim is to impart quality education in German language, literature, culture, translation & intercultural studies. The academic curriculum of advanced programmes is supplemented by numerous seminars on literature, intercultural hermeneutics, linguistics, translation, philosophy, aesthetics etc. The Department also gains from enriching contributions made by guest professors, research scholars, trainees and exchange students from German speaking countries, which provides the students with an opportunity of constant academic interaction with native German scholars throughout the academic session.

The M.A., M.A. (Hons.), M. Phil. & Ph.D. programmes in German Studies are research oriented. The comprehensive syllabus has an interdisciplinary and intercultural character, which enables the students to pursue research in the field of intercultural studies, a requirement in this era of globalisation.

The Department also carries out translation & research projects with other Indian, German, Austrian & Swiss Universities. The academic programmes and curriculum of German are constantly reviewed keeping in mind compulsory basic disciplinary knowledge, the latest academic developments in German Studies, the local and global scenario and the vocational interests of the students.

The German Department has had academic exchange programmes with the Universities of Bonn, Erfurt, Vienna, Salzburg and Basel. Currently it has various research and academic exchange programmes with the German Universities of Göttingen, Hamburg, Augsburg, Cologne & the Austrian University of Klagenfurt. The Department offers practical training and guidance in the field of German as a foreign language to students/trainees from German speaking countries. Meritorious B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. students of the Department get the opportunity of pursuing partial studies/research at German/Austrian Universities under various academic exchange programmes. .

Aims & Objectives:

Our aim is to impart quality education at all levels of teaching (language, literature, culture-studies and research). Our M.A. and M. Phil programmes are research oriented. A comprehensive syllabus, which we follow, has an inter-disciplinary and inter-cultural character which makes the students competent to pursue research in the field of inter-cultural studies which is a requirement in this era of globalization. Beside post-graduate studies in literature we offer part-time courses in language, which aim at language proficiency as well as motivate and prepare interested students for Post-Graduate Studies.

Scholarships:

The Department offers two Merit scholarships to postgraduate students of the Department of German. Besides, the department has a number of interuniversity academic and research projects with a number of universities in German speaking countries. The undergraduate and postgraduate students and research scholars avail of scholarships to Germany as part of a departmental academic / research project, or as prize for competitions, as research fellowship / summer job placement of the German Academic Exchange Service. Several Avenues for getting stipends for partial / full studies in foreign Universities are opening up.

M.A. in German studies/M.A. in German Studies (Translation)
Five year Integrated BA/MA Degree Course in German

The office of the Department of German is situated in Ranade Bhavan, Room No. 111, First Floor, Kalina (Vidyanagari) Campus of the University of Mumbai. The Kalina Campus of the University of Mumbai, off CST Road is accessible by both Central Railway (Kurla Station) and Western Railway (Santacruz Station). Bus routes 313, 318, 418 and 37 ply from Kurla Station (West) to the Campus and bus routes 213, 313, 318, 306 and 619 ply from Santacruz East to the Campus. The Campus is situated approximately 12 kms. away from The Sahar International Airport, Mumbai and approximately 6 kms. from the domestic airport Chatrapati Shivaji Airport.
