Course Structure


The Department offers Post-graduate Courses such as M.Sc. (by Papers) and Ph.D. in Biophysics. Credit system is going to be implemented from 2012-2013. M.Sc. (Biophysics) by paper based on credit and grade system (with effect from 2012-2013)

Eligibility

The candidates who have either passed / appeared for B.Sc. degree examination of Mumbai University or any other university recognized as equivalent thereto with the combination of the following subjects: Physics + Chemistry, Chemistry + biology, Life Science + Biochemistry, Microbiology and Biotechnology. Candidates must secure minimum 50% marks at B.Sc. examination as per the rules of University of Mumbai and Govt. of Maharashtra.

Selection of the Candidates and number of seats available:

The candidates will be selected purely on the merit. Total capacity of the admission of the first year M.Sc. students is 20. some out of those 20 seats are allotted to reserve categories as per the rules and regulation of Govt. of India and Maharashtra. Candidates from Universities other than University of Mumbai: Only 2% of the total seats (i.e 20 seats are offered by the University of Mumbai for M.Sc Degree Course in Biophysics) are offered to the students obtaining B.Sc Degree from Universities other than Mumbai University.

Issuance of forms:

Copies of the prescribed application forms for admission can be obtained from office of the Head, Department of Biophysics, University of Mumbai, Vidyanagari, Santacruz (E), Kalina , Mumbai 400 098 between 11.00am and 4.30 pm. after the declaration of B.Sc. result.

Submission of forms:

The duly completed forms should be submitted to Head Department of Biophysics, University of Mumbai,Vidynagari, Santacrux (E), Kalina Mumbai 400098 on or before last date. The admission to the said course will be strictly on the basis of merit of T.Y B.Sc. examination. Information about eligibility, admission criteria etc will also be made available at the Department of Biophysics, University of Mumbai, Vidyanagari, Santacruz (E), Kalina campus.

The duration of the course will be of two years as M. Sc. Part I and Part II. The examination will be conducted at the end of each academic year. The academic year normally begins on June 10 (or on the second Monday of June) every year.

How To Apply(General Instructions for filling up an application form):

Admission is strictly on the basis of Merit. The Application Form must be complete in all respect and is to be submitted to the Head, Department of Biophysics, University of Mumbai. Vidynagari, Santacruz (E), Kalina, Mumbai 400098 on or before last date for submission of Application Forms (as specified at the time of collection of Application Form by the applicant). All the enclosures to the Application Form (such as Mark Sheets of First, Second and Third Year B.Sc. examination/School leaving certificates and / or other documents specified in the Application Form) must be attested by appropriate authority, before submitting to the Department. The Originals of the said documents would be retained by the Administrative Office of the Biophysics Department only to be returned to the concerned students on specified dates ( after the process of Admission is completed).

Instruction to the candidates belonging to the SC / ST/ DT/ NT/ OBC etc. categories:

Candidates will have to enclose the following certificates:
Attested copies of the marks memo of I, II & III year B.Sc. examination passed by them. Application belongs to the reserve categories (SC/ST/SC) converted to Buddhism, DT/SPL backward class, and NT-1 will have to bring attested Xerox copy of the caste certificate issued by the competent authority. Candidates belonging to the OBC categories will have to bring attested Xerox copy of the Creamy Layer certificate issued in the currents financial year by the competent authority. Applicants belonging to categories mentioned above without the creamy layer certificate will not be entertained. Graduates from Universities other than the University of Mumbai are also required to attach a Provisional Eligibility Certificate from the University of Mumbai. This could be obtained from the eligibility section, Dr Babsaheb Ambedkar Bhavan, Mumbai University, Vidynagari, Santacruz (E), Mumbai 400098.
Special Instructions for the candidates whose names are in the list of admission:
Admission will not be given unless the original T Y B.Sc. Mark sheet is submitted to the office. The students who want to cancel their admission can collect their original mark sheet only after producing documentary evidence from the authorities of College/ Institute where the student has secured admission. Such students will have to surrender their seat by giving a written application to the Head department of Biophysics stating the reason for the cancellation of admission. Students whose original marks sheet is deposited with the office should claim the same on specified date. The Candidates proposing to cancel his/her admission (as secured by him/her for M.Sc Degree in Biophysics), could get refund fees (University ordinance 0.3574) by submitting an Application (in duplicate) addressed to the Registrar, University of Mumbai. Verification of appearance of name of the students in the merit list put by University Department of Biophysics would be the responsibility of concerned Students/ their representatives.

NB:Foreign students will have to pay five times of prescribed fees. The fee collected in different heads will be spent only for specified purpose for which it has been collected. Fees are payable by cash in the Allahabad Bank, Kalina Branch, Wadia High School, Ground Floor, Opp. University Campus.Tuitions fees once paid is normally not refunded. However, tuition fees will be refunded if the candidates do not attend any theory/practical/seminar class. Application for refund of fees should be addressed to the Registrar, University of Mumbai in duplicate.No transference Certificate will be issued to the students who leave the Department, unless they have cleared all the dues.

Ph.D. Degree

The Ph.D. Degree (in Biophysics): involves submission of Dissertation to the University based on the research conducted under the supervision of a faculty members (who will be the recognized teacher of the University for guiding students for Ph.D degree) working at the department of Biophysics. Students with Masters Degree (M.Sc) in Sciences (as per the University circular No. 441 of 2005) are entitled to seek admission for Ph.D. programme in Biophysics.
