M.A. / M.Sc. by Papers

The Structure of the M.A. / M.Sc. degree courses by papers is as follows. In the first year (Part-I) of M.A. / M.Sc. there are four compulsory papers and two practicals. In the second year (Part-II) there are two compulsory papers, two optional papers to be chosen by the candidate and two practicals. They are :

M.A. / M.Sc. Part I

Paper I : Fundamentals of Geomorphology
Paper II : Geography of Climato-biotic Interaction.
Paper III : Geography of Human Societies.
Paper IV : Spatial Organisation of Economic Activities.
Paper V : Practical Paper I (Tools and Techniques of Spatial Analysis - I)
Paper VI : Practical Paper II (Tools and Techniques of Spatial Analysis - II)

M.A. / M.Sc. Part II

Paper VII : Spatial Dimensions of Development.
Paper VIII : Geography of South Asia.
Paper IX & X : Optional Papers
Paper XI : Practical Paper III
Paper XII : Practical Paper IV

Each student shall choose two Optional Papers from Group A or Group B or Group C. Alternatively he / she may select one paper from either Group A or Group B along with one paper / dissertation from Group C.

The Following is the list of Optional Papers in various groups :

Group A - Physical / Natural Resources Group:

1. Tropical Geomorphology.
2. Coastal Geomorphology.
3. Fluvial Geomorphology.
4. Climatology of the Tropics.
5. Microclimatology.
6. Plant Geography with special reference to tropics.
7. Geography of soils with special reference to tropics.
8. Geographical perspective on Ocean Development.
9. Geography of Water Resources Management.

Group B - Social and Cultural Group :

1. Regional Development and Planning.
2. Urban Geography.
3. Social Geography.
4. Historical Geography.
5. Political Geography.
6. Cultural Geography.
7. Agricultural Geography.
8. Geography of Energy Resources.
9. Industrial Geography.
10. Geography of Trade & Marketing.
11. Geography of Transport & Communications.
12. Geography of Tourism and Recreation.
13. Geography of Tribes with Special reference to India.

Group C - Interface Group:

1. Thematic Cartography.
2. Advanced Techniques in Geography.
3. Geography of Environmental Quality.
4. Theoretical Geography.
5. Geography of Health.
6. Dissertation.

M.A. / M.Sc. by research :

The students have to put in a minimum of 4 terms and submit a dissertation based on original research carried out by them.

Admission Procedure

The procedure for enrollment of candidates to the M.A. / M.Sc. courses (by papers) is as follows :
i) The application form for admission to the course can be obtained from the office of the Registrar, University of Mumbai, Vidyanagari Campus, Santacruz (East), Mumbai 400 098 on payment of Rs. 50/-. The application forms carry serial numbers. Any form not so numbered is not accepted by the department.

ii) The application form duly filled in, signed and accompanied by the certified copies of statement pf marks, caste certificate, in case of SC/ST/DT/NT/BC, SBC and OBC etc. candidates is to be submitted to the office of the Department during the period specified for the purpose on the notice board of the department. Incomplete applications without mark sheet, caste certificate issued by the competent authority et. are not considered.

iii) The list of students selected for admission to the course strictly on the basis of merit is put on the notice board of the Department. Generally three such admission lists based on merit are displayed one after the other with a short interval in between.

iv) For admission the marks obtained by the candidate in Geography at B.A. and B.Sc. examination of the University are considered for deciding merit for admission. Separate lists are prepared for candidates depending on the number of papers offered at B.A. / B.Sc. level (e.g. 6 or 3 or 2). The students with a larger number of papers are given preference.

Applicants from other universities are required to submit a provisional certificate of eligibility while enrolling for the course. This provisional eligibility certificate can be obtained from the Registrar, Eligibility Section, University of Mumbai, Ranade Bhavan, Vidyanagari, Mumbai 400 098 after submitting the application and necessary remittance.

v) The candidate selected for admission to the M.A. /M.Sc. Part I course has to pay the tuition fees as well as the fees for registration as a post-graduate student, as notified in the list of selected candidates put up on the notice board of the Department. The fee will have to be paid on or before the last date mentioned in the list, failing which the candidate will forfeit his / her claim to the seat allotted in the list.

vi) A candidate who fails to avail of the admission offered to him / her before the last date as mentioned in the list of selected candidates is not considered for a seat in the second or subsequent list.

vii) The vacancies that may arise on account of the selected candidates not availing themselves of the admission before the last date or those who might withdraw their admission are notified through subsequent announcements in the Department and students are chosen from the merit based waiting list prepared after the third list. Students selected for admission have to pay the tuition and registration fees on or before the date indicated to them while admission is granted, failing which they will forfeit claim of admission to the course and the same is offered to the next deserving candidate on the merit based waiting list.

viii) The quota for reservation at the time of admission to the courses, for the students of the University of Mumbai, prescribed for different categories is as follows :

b) Scheduled Tribes - 07%

c) Denotified Tribes (DT) - 2.5%

d) Vimukta Jati (VJ) - 03%

e) Vanjari - 02%

f) Nomadic Tribes (NT) - 3.5%

g) Special Backward Class (SBC) - 02%

h) Other Backward Class (OBC) - 19%

i) General (including students from Other Universities) - 48%

DISTRIBUTION OF SEATS

There are 80 seats at each of the parts for M.A. and 10 for M.Sc. courses.
