Department of Chemistry

The University Department of Chemistry, University of Mumbai, established in the year 1967, conducts two-year post-graduate courses in Physical, Inorganic, Organic and Analytical Chemistry, leading to the award of M. Sc. (By Papers) degree of the University of Mumbai. In addition, it also conducts programs for M. Sc. (By Research), and Ph. D. degrees. Since inception of the department, over 1300 students have taken their Master’s degree by papers, more than 250 students have been awarded doctorates, while a greater number of students have taken their M. Sc. Degree by research. Under the M. Phil. Programme, 50 teachers from affiliated colleges have received their degrees. It is indeed a pleasure to report that alumni of the Department are holding key positions in the Industry and academic institutions.


The department runs projects received from the various national funding agencies such as UGC, DST, CSIR, DAE etc. and also from the Industries. Recently the Department has been sanctioned a grant of Rs. 1.2 crores under the FIST programme of the Department of Science and Technology. A 300 MHz NMR has been installed under this grant. The Department has also received a grant of Rs. 70 lakhs under the Special Assistance Programme (SAP) by the University Grants Commission. GC-MS is being procured under this grant.
